Course Objectives
The main objective of the one-year elementary Japanese is the introduction
of the basic grammatical structures and vocabulary of present-day spoken
Japanese. You are expected to develop a speaking and listening ability and
to learn the Japanese writing systems, including mastery by the end of this
semester of all of the Kanji characters introduced during the full
year's sequence of the course (about 275).
There are three main objectives during this second semester:
- aquisition of an ability to ask and answer questions on topics such
as personal history and leisure activities and to perform tasks such as
introducing yourself, ordering a meal, asking directions and making purchases;
- acquisitions of an ability to understand complex (i.e., coordinated and
subordinated) sentences and a relatively long stretch of connected discourse
- learning about 175 Kanji characters (beyond the approximately 100
learned in Japanese 1-A).
